Summary - School in the old days.

The village school at Kirkcowan took children up to age fourteen, but some went on to secondary education [in Newton Stewart] at twelve. Margaret Muir recalls an elderly relative telling her that she didn't study geography at school because her father couldn't afford the extra penny. In those days school lessons cost a penny per subject per week.
