The options 'and', 'or' and 'not' allow you to combine search terms in order to narrow or broaden search results, or to exclude results which contain a particular word or phrase. You may also specify different fields for each search term.
You may search for recordings in English, Gaelic or Scots, or a combination of all three. The default setting is for recordings in all three languages to be searched. You can uncheck these fields as appropriate.
You may search in one, two or all of the three collections. The default setting is for all three collections to be searched; you can uncheck the collection fields as appropriate.
You can search in all fields or in any one of the fields listed in the drop-down menu. For example, you can search by Track ID. Each recording has its own unique Track ID and this is displayed on the full record page for each recording. Please ensure that you enter the Track ID in the same format as it appears on the full record.
You can also search by Person ID by selecting this option from the drop-down menu. Each contributor and reporter has his/her own unique Person ID. This unique identifier can be found within the individual ‘Biography’ pages, which you can access by clicking on the contributor’s/reporter’s name within the ‘Full Record’ or ‘Results’ pages.
You will get results based on the exact keyword you enter unless you click on the box near the top of the ‘Advanced Search’ page, which allows you to get results based on fuzzy searching. For example if you enter ‘fish’ as a keyword and then click the box for fuzzy searching, you will also get results for terms such as ‘fishes’, ‘fishing’ and ‘fisheries’.
